Hill of Mountain Glen HarpsThis is a blog where I will share about the custom harp projects that I have been working on lately, and some that are already finished! :-) I build custom harps in all sizes and styles possible, from cross double and single strung harps with from 10 to 42 strings, to electric-acoustic and midi harps. I also build laser beam harps, with red and green lasers instead of strings!

But at a bit slower rate of speed. :-)<br /></p><p><br /></p><p>I am not building cross or double strung harps anymore, and rarely building any wire strung harps. I am trying to keep it simple and am building just 10 to 29 string Lyres and small harps. I have a few projects in my Que right now, and can look at future similar smaller harps and Lyres.<br /><br />Most usually my King David Lyres have just 10 strings.<br /><br />So, do not be shy about contacting me regarding a possible project! I may say No, but I may say, Yes, maybe, in time ! :-)<br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p>Glenn J. It is designed to be a possible re-creation, of a 12th century French /English Lyre that perhaps would have been played in the court of Henry II and Elanor of Aquatint. I built it to be played on stage during a semi-professional production of 'The Lion in Winter', at the Camelot Theater in Talent Oregon. It is built with 40 year air-dried Engelman Spruce and Black Walnut, with gold leaf work, painted decoration and crystal inlays.<br />

These are photos of a re-created 7 string Viking Lyre I created for a client several years ago, using Oregon Myrtle wood and Engleman Spruce. There are inset amber 'eyes', in the stylized dragon heads carved on the top of the Lyre. The string tension is quite light, with three different string gauges used.Glenn J. The first shots are of the rough clamped construction, and on to today !:-)<br />

<b>King David
Davidic Harps, Nevels and Kinnors </b></h3>
<hr />
<div class="style25">
<b><b>
<span class="style13">I am now able to offer my Kinnors created with Olive
Wood from the Holy Land</span>.</b></b></div>

<b>
</b><br />
<div class="style25">
<b>More than 3000 years ago in ancient Israel, a young
shepherd boy named David was brought quickly many times in the middle of
the night to play his harp before an ailing King Saul. The king had
been having nightmares, anger fits and general malaise that was
affecting his mind as well as his physical health. When the harp was
being played he 'felt better and the evil spirit departed from Saul".
Powerful words to describe a situation known all too well by many people
in our own times.</b><br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>Harp therapy is a general term used to
describe the continuum of types of therapies in which the harp is used.
It may be provided at home or in a clinical setting. When therapeutic
harp music is played, recipients may receive beneficial effects such as
increased relaxation, improvement in sleep, decreased pain and anxiety,
stabilization of vital signs, and improvement in mood. An end-of-life
music vigil can also help a patient to achieve a peaceful transition. </b><br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>The
servants of King Saul knew that the sounds of the harp were able to
have a healing affect on people. They didn't have the scientific
knowledge of why and how, but they did know that something profound
happened to people when the harp was played, and so they found the 'best
harpist' in the land to bring to their ailing king to ease his
suffering and bring him moments of peace and well being.</b></div>
<b>
<div class="style25">
A part of my family is said to have a personal
connection to King David, of decent from the House of David. It was my
ancestral family, De Nasi (meaning Prince and referring to decent from
David), family ancestors who escaped the inquisition in Spain to settle in
Venice Italy in the 1400`s, who were regarded as descendents of the House of
David. They made their way through the Court of Henry VIII in England, with
their descendents eventually settling in early Virginia, in the 1600-1700`s.<br />

<span class="style32">The Kinnor
Davidic type of harp</span></div>
<div class="style25">
<br /></div>
<div class="style25">
This type of harp, or more properly Lyre, was
played in the time of King David and in Israel's First & Second
Temples periods. Its structure and basic design is known from ancient
coins, Biblical descriptions and from Talmudic information. The Kinnor
is built in the style of a Lyre, with a double upright neck support for
the horizontal neck.</div>
<div class="style25">
<b>The scholars have decided that these ancient
Kinnors, Davidic Lyres were usually tuned with two different note
ranges, from middle C up to E, or from A below middle C, up to A.</b></div>
<div class="style25">
The strings on my Custom Kinnors are nylon as the
standard, though for an extra charge gut strings can be used. Custom models
with Bronze strings can also be designed and created. Precious metal strings
are also possible, please inquire.</div>
<div class="style25">
<br /></div>
<div class="style25">
I can build these King David Kinnors, Davidic Lyres
out of a number of wood choices, Black Walnut, Figured Maple, Cherry
wood, and my
favorite, Myrtle wood, which is the same tree as the Biblical Laurel
tree. <span class="style13">I am also now as of 2013 building my King David Davidic Lyres from
Olive wood from Israel and Italy.</span></div>
<div class="style25">
<br /></div>
<div class="style31">
My wood source in Israel can provide ancient 500 to 1,000
year old olive wood from Jersruslam or Bethlehem, as well as from other
locations in the Holy Land. The sizes of the available wood from Israel
varies, so at times I will use some Olive wood from Italy in combination
with the wood from the Holy land.</div>
<div class="style31">
<br /></div>
<div class="style25">
<b>I price out my Davidic Lyres and Kinnors
individually, according to how large, how many strings, and how much detail
carving you may desire. Please email me and tell me what you have in mind.
<span class="style13">The price range is usually from a low of $1,500, up to $2,500 and more, if
gemstones or precious metals are used. Olive wood is rare and more
expensive, so for this wood an individual quote will be made depending on
the current availability and price.</span></b></div>

The Nevel Harp</div>

<div class="style25">
The Ancient Jewish Nevel Harp, was usually built
with 22 strings, strung with strings made from gut, or in some cases with
wire strings made from bronze, and perhaps gold and silver. This harp style
resembles the Celtic lap harp in many ways. This style of harp is also seen
in marble carving form the Greek Cycladic Islands.</div>
<div class="style25">

<div class="style25">
These harps I can build with the 22 strings matched up
with the 22 letter of the Hebrew Aleph-Bet. The note range is three octaves,
from Middle C to C, two above middle C. Nylon strings are standard,
but gut strings can be used at an extra charge. Bronze strings can also be
used, and precious metal strings are possible, please inquire about them.</div>
<div class="style25">
<br /></div>
<div class="style25">
I build these Nevels the same basic way I build all my
harps, of all solid hardwood and Spruce, with five sided rounded staved
sound boxes, with all pieces book-matched. The back sound holes can be
custom carved in the shape of shooting stars, olive branches, or many other
shapes. I can carve the letters of the Alep-Bet next to the corresponding
note, on the string rib as well. </div>
<div class="style25">
<br /></div>
<div class="style25">
The detail of the neck and pillar can incorporate many
types of carving, in Hebrew prayers, olive branches, carved Doves of Peace
or any other inspired image you may see in your Dreams and Prayers. For
example, the entire neck at the top of the Nevel can be carved like a
range of hills in Israel, with detailed carving of olive groves and villages
tucked in the folds, and with a stream flowing down onto the fore-pillar,
cascading down and around to the base of the harp.</div>
<div class="style25">
<br /></div>
<div class="style25">
For a Custom Nevel, with the Aleph-Bet carved into the
string rib next to the corresponding string, custom shaped back sound holes,
and two small carved and gilded, star of David sound holes in the sound
board, nylon strings and a full set of Loveland sharping levers,
<span class="style13">the price is $2,700. </span></div>

Built from a combination of Olive wood from Israel and
Italy,<span class="style13"> the price is $3,500.</span></div>

For gut strings, and for extra carving of Hebrew Prayers
and lettering, olive branches and more, <span class="style13">I will quote
each project individually.</span> As with all my custom harp projects, I
will produce a full sized drawing for your approval, before I start to
build.</div>
<div class="style30">
Custom Sizes</div>
<div class="style25">
<b>I can build these type of Harps-Nevels and
Lyres-Kinnors for you, in almost any size and number of strings, though
some scholars point to the ancient Israeli harps as perhaps having 10
strings
for the Kinnor, which has a symbolic importance in Jewish Mystical
beliefs,(
Ten Commandments, the Ten Plagues, the Ten Sepheroth in the body),
and 22 strings for the Nevel, which corresponds to the number of
letters in
the Hebrew Aleph-Bet. </b></div>
<div class="style25">
<br /></div>
<div class="style25">
A small Kinnor, to be easily playable, is best not
strung with more than 12 strings. A triangular King David harps can be
built with from 19 up to 45 strings. Both styles can be shaped and
decorated with carving and inlay work in many different ways that can
bring the theme and feeling of King David`s music to life in your hands

</span></div><div><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: small;">I will be demonstrating this system at the DNA Conference in Los Angeles on May 15-16. </span><span style="font-size: small;"><span style="color: #891555; font-weight: bold;">DNA US Conference 2012 : <span style="font-style: italic;"> New Interactive Frontiers in Leisure Facilities Innovative Digital Interactive Experiences http://www.thestingerreport.com/us-conference.html</span></span></span></div><div><span style="font-size: small;"> </span></div><div><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: small;">The person wearing these gloves 'plays' music and other sounds or music and video /still image projections as well as stage lighting or any DMX controllable effect, by shining the lasers onto specially mounted photo-optic sensors, that are connected to a wireless or wired controller unit.The wireless controller is faster than Bluetooth, using our own protocol.</span></div><div><span style="font-size: small;"> </span></div><div><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: small;"> The controller sends the signals to a laptop computer and out to the sound system. The sensors are connected to the wireless controller via long wires that allow the sensors to be set onto the walls or scattered abut the floor of a performance space, or mounted and any way that can be dreamed up. There can be a large number of sensors, with several/many on each channel, or just exactly the same number as there is channels. The system can be from 8 to 32 channels.</span></div><div><span style="font-size: small;"> </span></div><div><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: small;">Two additional sensors are 'control' sensors, that when shined on can change the programming of all the other sensors to a different pre-programmed selection of sounds and images/videos, in a 'song up', or 'song down' mode.. The software I use can also control any stage lighting, smoke, pyrotechnics, or and other effect that can be controlled via DMX. .</span></div><div><span style="font-size: small;"> </span></div><div><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: small;">The OptiMusic software also allows for the sounds to be modified via the intensity of the light shinning on the sensors, with a higher level of voltage created when the lasers light is close to a sensor, as compared to further away. So pitch or volume of the sound can be varied in this way, via an analog effect.</span></div><div><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: small;"> </span></div><div><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: small;">Here are the specs on the software I use: </span></div><div><span style="font-size: small;"><strike><span style="font-family: Arial;"> </span></strike></span></div><div><span style="font-size: small;"><b><span style="font-family: Arial;">OptiMusic - OMPC1 Software</span></b></span></div><div><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: small;"><br />

It has 24 strings with spring loaded pitch bend levers on the bottom ends of those strings. Eight of the strings are just normal electric strings. The strings are all electric guitar and electric bass strings. there are 8 Seymour Duncan humbucker pickups on an adjustable support bar just above the sound box. It is harness mounted and will be used with a cordless sound system to play blues and jazz. The owner will debut with it at the World Harp congress in Vancouver BC, in late July. The finish is flat low gloss balance, with carved and painted gold Harley Davidson flames on both sides of the pillar.<br />

This harp is now installed under a stone archway in the Jewish Children`s Museum in Brooklyn NY. The exhibit should be open in the summer of 2011. It has 7 green 5mw lasers with 7 sensors. It is carved from Oregon Myrtle wood, to look as if it was made from a branch of an olive tree, complete with leaves and olives. Much of the carving is also gilded. The carved Hebrew lettering refers to King David. This laser harp is designed to look like it could be a harp with strings, thus the carved 'tuning pegs'. </div><div class="style36"><strong><br />
</strong></div><div class="style42"><span class="style13">We have designed a new framed Laser Harp model that will not look "Framed", with the harp being all stainless steel in construction</span>. </div><div class="style42"><br />
</div><div class="style42">The design has a waist high stainless steel control console, that is only four inches deep, by fourteen inches wide, by 5 feet long. The control console is supported by stainless support pieces that angle out as they stretch up to 10 feet above the players head, until they terminate at 12 feet wide at the top, where a connecting piece ties them together.</div><div class="style42"><br />
</div><div class="style42">The 8 green lasers ( can be set up with Green or Red Lasers, or a mixture of both), shine up in a fan shape from the control console, to terminate at 8 optic sensors on the top piece. The lasers also will produce visually pleasing 'over splash' of green laser light, flashing over the heads of your audience, reflecting off the top Stainless Steel cross piece. </div><div class="style42"><br />
</div><div class="style42"> The lasers are triggered by breaking the beams at any point in their transit to the optic sensors, triggering any type of media, audio or visual , in loops, sequences, single note/ sound, up to 70 times per second. The fully programmable software is installed in the compact lap top computer that is installed in the control console( removable for transport). The software includes a wave file editor and a built-in synthesizer. </div><div class="style42"><br />
</div><div class="style42">The lasers can also be reflected to additional optic sensors that are mounted in the control console surface, using the analog effect of changing voltage produced by different levels of laser light reflected to these sensors. This analog aspect of the software can produce variable pitch and volume change in the already triggered sounds and sequences produced by breaking the beams that shine at the top set of sensors, as well as additional variable sounds and image projections. </div><div class="style42">This reflecting can be done with just the bare hands, though reflective gloves can be worn to add to the effect and visual appeal. ( The low powered lasers used are considered safe by the US FDA, to interact with, with bare hands).The reflected green laser beams also will flash off the Stainless Steel control consul surface, adding additional flashes of brilliant green Laser Light.</div><div class="style42"><br />
</div><div class="style42">There is in addition a set of four control buttons or pedals that can be triggered to change the programming of all 16 sensor channels to an entirely new set of music/ sounds/ notes/ video and still imagery.</div><div class="style42"><br />
</div><div class="style42"> Visual imagery and audio sounds can be triggered at the same time in all channels.</div><div class="style42"><br />
</div><div class="style38">Imagine,..... eight Green lasers shooting up in a spreading fan of brilliant green Light, to sensors overhead, and the stainless steel top rib reflecting and splitting the over-splash of the beams to shine all over and above the audience in a performing space...you break those beams, trigger waves of music chords, sounds of space and nature, while also with the same beams triggering visual projectors to display large images moving on the scrim at the back of your stage,...... while the Brilliant Green Laser Beams you are breaking are also being reflected to other sensors on your control console to trigger secondary programming, including volume /pitch change via the level of reflected Laser Light. All the while, the over splash form the Green Lasers is flashing off the highly reflective Steel. </div><div class="style38"><br />
</div><div class="style13"> <span class="style36">All of this in a streamlined space-age very slim and low profile, stainless steel frame ! ;-)</span></div><div class="style36">The software we use has the capacity to respond to a break of a laser beam up to 70 times per second. You can program up to 60 events per 'song', with an endless number of possible 'song' combination of any type of audio-visual event, image, video, sound sampled wave files, etc. The software is fully programmable with an on-screen syntheses and wave file editor, available to pre-program an endlessVarietyy of sound and visual scapes of any type of audio or visual event file or element.. This Laser Light Harp model will have 16 channels available. Our software can control three LCD or other type of projectors from one lap top, computer when an extra video card is installed.</div><div class="style36"><br />
</div><div class="style42"><span class="style13">This all Stainless Steel, modular/foldable, compact for transport Laser Harp, with 8 Green and/or Red lasers and 16 audio/visual trigger channels, fully equipped with laptop computer & software multimedia controller system, can be custom ordered for US$19,000. Shipping is extra.</span><br />

</div><strong> <div class="style36"> For installation in your Science or Children`s Museum, we can design a compact lap or floor sized laser harp that looks just like a harp. The cabinet and Harp are both constructed form very durable Rock Maple, finished with tough Poly finish, and can be colored with a wide range of colored stains or tints.</div><div class="style36"><br />
</div><div class="style36">We can build for you a compact self contained unit of a beautiful hardwood base cabinet that houses all the electronics, computer and stereo sound system, with a Laser Beam Light Harp mounted securely to the top. This option is all self contained, needing only a AC power jack in the floor below the cabinet ( either 110 or 220, a step down transformer will be supplied in the case of 220 power). This Laser Harp comes with full instruction/installation manual including photos, and is 'plug and play', with full functioning assembly taking only an hour or two.</div><div class="style36"><br />

The software includes a wave file editor and a built-in either. The lasers can also be reflected to additional optic sensors that are mounted in the control console surface, using the analog effect of changing voltage produced by different levels of laser light reflected to these sensors. This analog aspect of the software can produce variable pitch and volume change in the already triggered sounds and sequences produced by breaking the beams that shine at the top set of sensors. There is in addition a set of four control buttons or pedals that can be triggered to change the programing of all 16 sensor channels to an entirely new set of music/ sounds/ notes/ video and still imagery. Visual imagery and audio sounds can be triggered at the same time in all channels.</span></h3><h3 class="UIIntentionalStory_Message" data-ft="{"type":"msg"}"><span class="text_exposed_show" style="font-size: small;"></span></h3><h3 class="UIIntentionalStory_Message" data-ft="{"type":"msg"}"><span class="text_exposed_show" style="font-size: small;">This Laser Harp model is available by custom order, for $18,000 .</span><span class="UIStory_Message" style="font-size: small;"><span class="text_exposed_show"> </span></span></h3>Glenn J.
